Detailed biography

Sanctuary is a symphonic black metal band formed in 2006 in Paris. Influenced by the greatest bands of the genre, like Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth, Immortal, Opeth or even Carach Angren and Anorexia Nervosa, Sanctuary creates a dark and cold atmosphere throughout its music. Melodies and symphonies are gathered in a mix where the piano holds a particular position. The band is also influenced by heavy, thrash and death metal bands like Metallica, Children Of Bodom, In Flames, Slayer, Gojira, Lamb Of God, Meshuggah..., especially for the rhythmic aspect. To a lesser extent, jazz, classical and electronic musics also inspire the band.

Sanctuary was originally created by three brothers : Antoine (Guitare/lead vocals), François (Keyboard/back vocals) and Julien (Drums). The bass player changes several times until 2013. The band starts playing live regularly from 2008 to 2011, and shares gigs with bands like Nightcreepers and Winterburst.

After a two-year break, Sanctuary makes a fresh start in 2013 with the arrival of Sonny (bass), the making of new live performances and the recording of a very first 4-track EP. Thus, Beyond the Divine is released in october 2016, and the band continues doing gigs to present its first release. To support this effort, Sanctuary makes a music video for Beyond the Divine's last track : Overdeus, released in January 2018.

The band takes part in the Headbang Contest 2018 until the final round, but unfortunately do not manage to win the contest to play at Motocultor Festival.

On 2nd July 2018, Sanctuary releases Le Choix du Mal, a fully homemade album, with all the old compositions of the band, written between 2006 and 2010, and never released before.

François decides to leave the band in september 2018, after 12 years of collaboration. Indeed, he cannot reconcile his personnal and professional projects with the evolution of Sanctuary. Then, Luc joins the band in october 2018, and takes part of the two following gigs in Paris, and for the first time, in Rennes (Brittany). Unfortunately, Luc must leave the band in July 2019 and Sanctuary hires Axel as a session member to play the keyboard.

Sanctuary is currently working on its new album. Wait and see...
